Day 2 The Alchemist

Question each other and dig deeper. This is a book with many layers. What does the word "fate" mean to you all, for instance? Is this book only about religion or something more?

In the first 33 pages of the Alchemist you meet the main character Santiago. I find him very interesting because he is very educated and was going to become a preist but instead became a shepard. To me he seems spiritual and reads a lot into things. I like that he has read a lot into his dream and went to see the 'psychic.' The other character we meet is the King of Salem who tells him to find his personal legend, by selling his sheep and traveling to Egypt. The only conflict so far is an inner conflict between Santiago and himself in whether or not he should give up his sheep to find the treasure from his dream.

The character that we meet in the beginning, and he so happens to be the main character is Santiago. To me he seems like he has his head on straight. At a young age he knew that he wanted to travel, so he became a Shepard. Santiago became confused with his dreams and because of that dream he started his quest to the pyramids. He is doing so much to make his personal legend become a reality and that is very admirable. I don’t think that Santiago really knows what he wants to do because he worked for the crystal seller for almost a year and besides buy his 120 sheep he went to the pyramids.

One thing that I noticed about him is the fact that he seems pretty easily influenced. Especially by omens and what the old king said. I can't help to wonder if he is making a mistake by not staying at the crystal shop, especially with the money he is making. Any other ideas on this?

I kind of agree with you Cass. He has so many good ideas for the crystal shop and the money isn't bad at all. But Santiago knows what he wants and he knows that being stuck in a crystal shop like the crystal shop owner isn't what he wants, I don't think he wants to regret what he didn't do in his life.

Fate is a huge part in this book. To me fate is parts of your future you cannot change. To address the religion thing, I think this book is only about 50% religion. I think a lot of it is a personal journey to find himself and whatever his fate in life brings him. Did anyone else notice in the first few pages when he is reading his book that his taken him 2 years just to get past the first few pages he says something like " if I wrote a book I would introduce the characters one by one"? The funny thing is that is how this book is written, with each character introduced seperately so it's easy to remember everyone/

Day 1 Blk 1

I have finished the book and i like it alot. I get kinda confused what omens are. Are they like good things in your life that lead you in certain direction? Im not really sure.
In response to cassidy, i dont think the boy is making a mistake by leaving the crystal shop because he has to move on in order to find his personal ledgen. I believe that everything happends for a reason weather he stays or goes, something will happen that has an effect on the boy.
